Internet Speed Requirements
Exactly how much download and upload speed you need for every major platform and use case.
ISPs love to sell gigabit internet to households that need a fraction of that speed. Here's exactly how much speed each activity requires — so you can make an informed decision about your plan.
Streaming video
| Platform & Quality | Download Speed | Notes |
| Netflix SD | 3 Mbps | Minimum for standard definition |
| Netflix HD (1080p) | 5 Mbps | Recommended for HD |
| Netflix 4K Ultra HD | 15 Mbps | Minimum; 25 Mbps recommended |
| Disney+ 4K | 25 Mbps | Required for 4K HDR |
| YouTube 4K | 20 Mbps | For 4K 60fps HDR |
| Apple TV+ 4K | 25 Mbps | Recommended for Dolby Vision |
| Spotify / Apple Music | 0.5 Mbps | Highest quality audio streaming |
Video calls and conferencing
| Platform & Quality | Download | Upload |
| Zoom HD (720p) | 1.5 Mbps | 1.5 Mbps |
| Zoom Full HD (1080p) | 2.5 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| Google Meet HD | 2.6 Mbps | 3.2 Mbps |
| Microsoft Teams HD | 2 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| FaceTime HD | 1.2 Mbps | 1.2 Mbps |
Upload matters for video calls Video calls require symmetric speeds — you send your video as well as receive others'. If your upload speed is significantly lower than download (common on cable plans), this is often the bottleneck for call quality.
Online gaming
| Activity | Minimum Speed | Recommended Ping |
| Online multiplayer (casual) | 3 Mbps | Under 60ms |
| Online multiplayer (competitive) | 5 Mbps | Under 20ms |
| Game downloads (console/PC) | 50+ Mbps | N/A |
| Cloud gaming (Xbox Cloud, GeForce Now) | 20-35 Mbps | Under 40ms |
Live streaming (as a creator)
| Stream Quality | Upload Required | Notes |
| 720p 30fps | 3-4 Mbps | Minimum for decent quality |
| 1080p 30fps | 4-6 Mbps | Standard Twitch/YouTube quality |
| 1080p 60fps | 6-8 Mbps | Recommended for gaming streams |
| 4K streaming | 15-25 Mbps | YouTube Live 4K |
Remote work
| Activity | Download | Upload |
| Email and light browsing | 5 Mbps | 1 Mbps |
| File sharing (cloud storage) | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| Video calls (full day) | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| Video calls + file sharing simultaneously | 25 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| Heavy cloud-based work (developers, designers) | 50 Mbps | 20 Mbps |
Smart home devices
Individual smart home devices use very little bandwidth, but they add up in large households:
| Device | Typical Usage |
| Smart speaker (Alexa, Google Home) | 1-2 Mbps when active |
| Smart TV (streaming 4K) | 15-25 Mbps |
| Security camera (HD, continuous) | 1-4 Mbps upload per camera |
| Smart thermostat, lights, plugs | Under 1 Mbps (negligible) |
| Robot vacuum with live camera | 1-2 Mbps |
How much speed does my household need?
Add up the simultaneous activities in your home during peak usage. A household with two people working remotely, one person gaming, and one streaming 4K would need approximately: 5 + 5 + 5 + 25 = 40 Mbps minimum, with 100 Mbps recommended for headroom. For 4+ person households with heavy usage, 200-300 Mbps provides a comfortable buffer.
